Benefits

Join us and power Southwark

In return for your public service, we offer:

Competitive salaries

See each role for further details.

Generous annual leave

Most people who join us and work full-time receive an initial allowance of 26 days in addition to public holidays. Depending on your grade and length of service, this allowance may increase to 37 days over time.

Access to the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)

The LGPS is one of the largest public sector pension schemes in the country. It is a statutory scheme with benefits set out in law, making it very safe and secure.

Further information can be found on the dedicated LGPS website.

Travel schemes

At Southwark, we are passionate about sustainable transport. We participate in the Cycle to Work scheme, which can significantly reduce the cost of purchasing a bike, and we also offer interest-free season ticket loans.

Creative spaces and modern offices

Located just a few minutes from London Bridge, our headquarters are in modern accommodation at 160 Tooley Street, SE1 2HZ. We have invested in new technology to ensure many of our meeting rooms support hybrid working, and we are actively redesigning our office space to better enable collaboration and innovation.

Flexible working

We offer a wide range of flexible working options. We will provide you with the technology you need to work anywhere in our borough, as well as remotely where appropriate to your role. Other flexible working options include annualised hours, compressed hours, flexitime and job sharing. (Please note: flexi-time is not available for roles at grade 14 and above).

Personal and professional development

At Southwark, we take pride in supporting our employees to achieve their full potential. We offer access to excellent training and development opportunities, including our Professional Qualification Scheme, which enables employees to study for a professional qualification that is relevant to their role. In addition, we have a proven track record of supporting internal progression and enabling colleagues to gain broader experience through secondments and project work.

A supportive environment with a commitment to your wellbeing

Our workforce wellbeing programme includes access to regular seminars, webinars and resources, including our employee assistance programme, which provides confidential counselling and advice services that are available 24/7.

We also offer free eye tests and support towards the cost of your glasses if you need them for work.

We are proud to support a number of staff networks including EMPower (for ethnically diverse colleagues), NCompass (for disabled and neurodivergent colleagues), our Women’s Network, and our LGBTQ+ network.

Our family friendly policies offer generous support to parents and carers as well as special allowances for employees who foster and parents of babies born prematurely.
